How to Become Lean Without Hitting the Gym

Not all of us have the time to hit the gym every day but most of us want a lean and fit body. Also, many people who did go to the gym regularly did not benefit from it as desired. For those who do benefit from it, just one missed day breaks the chain and start looking for excuses to miss more days. Many people have this misconception that they cannot become lean without going to the gymnasium, but this is just a myth. Let’s just turn back the time a little bit.

Till about 2-3 decades ago, there were no gyms and people were fitter than they are now days. People used to do a lot of manual work and ate fresh, seasonal and whole foods. Our father and grandfather never went to a gym and many people of their generation can run faster than us. In today’s world, we live a sedentary lifestyle. Technology has reduced our work in every field of life. We have machines do to even the smallest tasks for us. We don’t like walking; we just start the ignition to buy a loaf of bread from a shop that is barely 200 meters away. There weren’t any escalators and people used to climb stairs in every shop and building. Hand blenders, washing machines, dish washers and vacuum cleaners have reduced the work of a housewife, while computers, laptops, smart phones and the internet have reduced the work of office goers.

In spite of all this, we are always short of time and don’t even sit down to enjoy a meal. While moving around we grab every chance to eat junk food. Junk food contains added sugar and preservatives that don’t get digested easily and turn in to fat. So, the first and foremost thing that a person should do to become lean is, make changes in their lifestyle. Junk food should be avoided as much as possible. One should eat more of whole foods and salads. But, that’s not enough! You need to maintain a healthy lifestyle to achieve a lean figure and maintain it.

Here are a few tips that can make you slimmer without visiting a gym:

1. Eat a balanced diet – Cut down on sugars and fried foods and eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods so that your body gets all the essential nutrients in adequate quantities. Many people take up strict dieting for weight loss but instead if you eat a nutritious diet and take 5-6 small meals during the day; it will be much better for you. Small meals get digested fast and you do not overeat. Also, one should not restrict themselves too much. You can be easy on yourself on the weekend. It’s ok to enjoy once in a while. Just don’t overdo it. If you restrict yourself too much, you feel very helpless when there is your favorite dessert in front of you and every time you have to say no to it. People who follow a strict regime often break down after a few days and then gobble up food, which puts all their previous efforts in vain.
Indulge in healthy snacking in between meals. Fruits, nuts, rice puffs and chickpeas are a few good options which do not give your body too many calories.

2. Get appropriate sleep – It might be surprising to know that lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, but it’s true. Haven’t you noticed when you are awake till late? Dinner time has gone by long before but if you’re awake, a midnight snack just can’t be avoided. When you do not sleep for the required amount o time, your body isn’t refreshed and it’s not ready for another day. At this time, your brain sends incorrect signals to the stomach, indicating that your body is weak and needs food. A person thus tends to eat more when he/she is sleepy and tired. Your body needs at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night to be able to gear up for another day. Try to follow a routine as much as possible and if you don’t get enough sleep, give yourself some extra time. It’s alright to be late to work once in a while else you will feel hungry and sleepy the whole day.

3. Exercise – Physical activity is a must in order to keep fit. Exercise is the ultimate fitness mantra. Pick an activity of your choice – exercise, aerobics, dance, yoga, skipping, running or jogging and spend at least half an hour doing it. The best thing about exercise is that it’s free of cost and you don’t need any costly equipment to do it. You just need your body to do it. You do not necessarily need to wake up early in the morning to exercise, although it’s better if you do. You can exercise at any time any place that is convenient to you. Just get up from your seat at work, stretch yourself and exercise a bit. Go for a walk once in a while.

4. Increase your fluid intake – Our body is made up of 75% water and we need to maintain the water in the body. The body loses a lot of water in the form of urine and sweat so keep your body hydrated at all times. Drink plenty of fluids. At least 8-10 glasses of water should be consumed every day. If you drink water in appropriate quantities, you also feel fuller and you can avoid unnecessary snacking. When we say fluids, we do not mean aerated drinks, packaged juices and squashes. These are nothing but sugar filled liquids that give you nothing but calories. They do not quench your thirst. Water and only plain water can help to quench your thirst and maintain a balance of electrolytes in the body.

Your health and fitness is entirely your responsibility and you can very well take care of it, without any gym membership. You do not need an instructor to tell you what your boy wants, since you know your body and its needs better than anyone else!
