An Age Old Remedy for Sinus Pressure

More commonly known as Sinusitis or Sinus Pressure, a sinus infection causes a lot of discomfort since the cavities around the nose get inflamed and swollen. Mostly it is caused by a virus and it causes a lot of pain in the sinuses. Our sinuses are located behind the nose, below the eyes, in the centre of the forehead and in the cheekbones. You may experience pain and discomfort in any of these areas. While suffering from a sinus infection, your nose becomes runny and you need to blow it often. Home remedies are safe and provide long term relief without causing any side effects.

Here are some home remedies for sinus pressure that have been used even by our ancestors:


  • Cinnamon – Used as a seasoning in various Indian curries, cinnamon contains anti-viral, antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to soothe the membrane lining of the sinuses and also decreases the inflammation. Just mix 2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder with equal amount of water and apply this paste on your forehead. It helps to clear sinus blockage.


  • Cumin Seeds–Cumin seeds are hot in nature and so they help to reduce the formation of mucus in the nasal passage and they also help to decrease the swelling in the sinuses. You can prepare a paste by mixing one teaspoon cumin powder with one teaspoon of honey and take this paste every day to get relief from sinus pressure. Another way of using cumin seeds is to tie one teaspoon of cumin seeds in a soft cotton cloth and inhaling the smell of cumin. Taking long breaths of the cumin fragrance helps to open the nostrils and acts as a decongestant.


  • Mustard Oil – It is known for its anti-microbial properties. Just pour 1-2 drops of mustard oil in the nostrils using a dropper. It helps to clear a blocked nose instantly.Onion – Onion has a high content of sulfur and thus it helps to get relief from sinusitis. It contains quercetin, which is a chemical compound and this is how onion gets anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. Onion helps to clear the sinuses. The easiest way to clear the sinuses with onion is to chop a few onions and let your eyes and nose water. The nasal passages get cleared instantly. You can also boil some water and add sliced onions to it. Now inhale the steam from this water and clear your sinuses.
