Does your hand reach your scalp every once in a while? Are you embarrassed in public due to your itchy scalp? Frustrating as it is; itching on the scalp is not as uncommon as you think! Children get an itchy scalp due to playing in the mud and from lice while so many adults also suffer from an itchy scalp due to a host of other reasons.
What causes the scalp to itch?
One can have an itchy scalp due to dryness, lack of scalp hygiene, dandruff, sebaceous cysts, nutritional deficiencies, flaky skin, anxiety, viral and fungal infections, eczema, stress, improper cleaning of the scalp and allergic reactions to hair products. Many shampoos, mousses, hair sprays and hair styling gels also cause itching on the scalp. Using the hair dryer too often can make the scalp dry, which can lead to itching. Many people like to color their hair or straighten them and this requires treating the hair with harsh chemicals and solutions. This can also lead to an itchy scalp.
Treating an itchy scalp doesn’t mean that you’ve to sit for hours in the salon and spend a fortune. Although a spa treatment could prove to be highly effective but many of us really don’t have that much of time to spare.
Here are some quick inexpensive ways to treat an itchy scalp while sitting at home:
1. Massage your scalp with a mixture of oils – A mixture of essential oils can help to get relief from an itchy scalp instantly.
Tip – Take a bowl and mix some olive oil, tea tree oil, almond oil and lavender oil. Massage your scalp with this mixture of essential oils with your fingertips. You can also give some steam by dipping a towel in hot water and placing it on your hair. This helps the oils to penetrate deep in to the scalp. If you’re short of time, just cover your scalp with a shower cap. This keeps the moisture intact. Wash off after an hour with a mild shampoo.
2. Use a Hair Mask – Pampering your hair with a hair mask is not only beneficial for your hair; it also works wonders on your scalp. It is one of the most effective ways to battle an itchy scalp.
Tip – One of the easiest masks you can prepare is a Banana & Honey Mask. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and natural oils; bananas help to provide the scalp with the much needed nourishment. Honey is a natural moisturizer and together they make a wonderful hair mask for the hair. Take a ripe banana and mash it. Add a tablespoon of honey to it and make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on your scalp liberally and allow it to stay for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with a mild shampoo. Banana and honey hair mask also helps to get rid of dandruff and reduce flakes from the scalp.
Another hair mask that is extremely effective is a banana & avocado hair mask. Not only does an avocado taste great; it is also an amazing conditioner and contains minerals, vitamins, proteins and antioxidants. They help to fight dandruff, nourish the scalp and make the hair shiny. Just mash two ripe bananas along with an avocado and apply this mask on your scalp. Let it stay for half an hour and rinse with water.
3. Moisturize the scalp – Since itchiness is caused due to dryness, moisturizing the scalp regularly is of utmost importance.
Tip – Moisturize your scalp using mayonnaise. It contains the goodness of oil and eggs and helps to keep the scalp hydrated for long. Coconut oil has been known for its nourishing properties since a long time. Just heat coconut oil in a bowl and massage it onto your scalp. Wash off with a mild shampoo.
4. Aloe Vera gel – Known for its moisturizing properties, aloe vera gel works like a miracle to get relief from an itchy scalp.
Tip – Just pluck an aloe vera leaf. Cut it open and scrape the gel from inside it. Massage this gel sparingly on your scalp with your fingertips. Wash off with a mild shampoo after 15 minutes. In case you do not have an aloe vera plant at home, you can easily get some gel at various stores.
5. Apply baking soda paste – Baking soda is easily available at our home and it can really help to relieve an itchy scalp. Baking soda exfoliates the scalp and removes all the impurities and dandruff from the scalp. It also helps to balance the pH level of the hair.
Tip – Apply some olive oil on the scalp. Prepare a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to your scalp. Allow it to stay on the scalp for 10-15 minutes and wash off. This helps the baking soda paste to cleanse the scalp without being too harsh.
6. Apply egg on the scalp – Forget about the smell; a raw egg can really help to reduce itchiness from the scalp. Egg is a source of natural protein and helps to hydrate the scalp immensely.
Tip – Just crack an egg in a bowl and whisk it. Apply the egg on your scalp and allow it to stay for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with a mild shampoo.
